The Problem With “Hypnosis Is Magic”

The good news is hypnosis is amazingly effective at helping people. The bad news is many people think hypnosis is magic.

Hypnosis isn’t magic. It’s a very specific process that anyone can experience if they have an attention span and can follow instructions.

Thanks to the media and other poor representations of hypnosis in pop culture there is a large number of misinformed people who think hypnosis is mystical, magical and even, God forbid, satanic.

For those people whose minds are already made up about this there’s nothing I can say. But for those willing to learn and put aside preconception they will find out that hypnosis is a natural process we all experience.

The problem of “Hypnosis is Magic” occurs when people come to me with some of the following requests:

Hypnosis as a cure for your relationship.

I once had a couple come to me requesting to hypnotize the wife to prove that she didn’t have an affair five years earlier while the husband was passed out drunk. Clearly, that was not a hypnosis problem, it was a relationship problem. I told them to see a counselor to help them with their trust issues.

Hypnosis for someone else’s problem

I still get asked “Can you make my kid/parent/spouse fill-in-the-blank?” Basically they are saying “I can’t control my this person the way I want. Can you help?”

The short answer to that is “Maybe I can, but only if they ask me.”

I know the strength of hypnosis and in some cases it’s possible to change people without them knowing but I won’t do that. It’s too much work and there are no guarantees.

Hypnosis to forget

This is usually requested because of pain or trauma that people want to get over. As powerful as hypnosis is total amnesia for events is hit-or-miss at best. Yes, it’s possible but it’s seldom efficient.

A better solution to painful memories and trauma is to strengthen character of the client so can remember events without associated pain. Former traumas become simply events of their life. They will agree they were painful but feeling stronger and those events no longer control them on a day-to-day basis.

Hypnosis for some new age psychic energy thing

Because hypnosis has such broad applications it’s been applied heavily in the new age arena of mystics, psychics and energy workers. While I wish them well in using it, for me hypnosis is a very powerful and precise tool for helping people. Things like ‘opening the third eye’ or ‘raising my own energy’ are just too nonspecific for me to measure. Hypnosis is best suited for changing unwanted behaviors and enhancing performance.

Conclusion

Yes, When I’m hypnotizing someone I go for the ‘Wow!’, that’s what they proclaim when the session is over. It’s a testament of the intensity of what they experienced and proof to them they were in hypnosis.

People will tell you the quality of change they feel from hypnosis is “magical” but that does NOT mean it is magic.

 

Why New Years Resolutions Don’t Matter

new-years-resolutionsMost of us consider the New Year as a time to re-evaluate … EVERYTHING … and vow to do better. That is the origin of the New Years Resolution.

This is the reason sales of gym memberships soar in January and why gym attendance plummets in February.

It’s hard to imagine what can happen in one year but each year we try again to do better.

Understand, I’m not telling anyone to stop making New Years resolutions. In fact, I’ think we would do better to make a resolution EVERYDAY for only that day.  That way it’s more likely over time that change will happen slowly over the year instead of all at once from January 1st onward.

Think of what you could do if you made 365 small day-long resolutions in a row. You would probably accomplish more with those 365 small resolutions than with a solitary yearly one.

What kind of daily resolution could you make?

  • To be kinder to those closest to you for this one day.
  • To repeat positive phrases quietly in your mind for this one day.
  • To show up on time for this one day.
  • To remove social media from your life for this one day.
  • To give the best service you can for this one day.
  • To read something positive for this one day.
  • To give an honest compliment to three or more people just for today.
  • Anonymously perform one act of kindness for today.

The list can go on and on.

Why wait for a year to roll around when you can resolve to do something good every time the day begins?

Perhaps the title of this article is wrong, New Years resolutions ARE important. Sometimes what is more important isn’t the big efforts we make to improve our lives, but the small ones.

Can you remember a time when there were smoking sections in every restaurant? I can. My how times have changed! Today more than 50 million Americans smoke, with about 46% of them trying to quit each year through various methods of smoking cessation.

A growing number of companies simply aren’t tolerating smoking in the workplace. Did you know about the ‘Smokers Surcharge’? That is, that more and more companies are beginning to demand that employees who smoke (or those who are overweight) share in a greater part of their health care costs. Understanding How memory works

In order to better understand how hypnosis works for memory improvement, it might be is interesting to understand how the mind works in the first place.  Our memories are part of a complicated system which is not fully understood. There are different kinds of memory, like short term “working” memory, like recalling an email address momentarily for immediate use. Then there is long-term memory, which refers to your semantic or autobiographical memory.

How hypnosis works for Memory Recall

Hypnosis can be used to enhance memory recall by dealing with the sub-conscious mind to improve the mechanisms in which we create and retrieve memories.  Have you ever hidden something important, only to forget where you hid it? You might not have considered it, but many people have used hypnosis to recover lost items.  Over the years I have been asked to help recover lost jewelry, keys, wedding rings, money and so on. This is a powerful demonstration of the usefulness of hypnosis in memory recall.

“Hypnosis” is a focused state of consciousness. The hypnosis practitioner uses guided imagery to induce a hypnotic state. While in a hypnotic trance, the hypnotherapist is able to deal with your subconscious mind on a non-threatening level. Onc e a hypnotic state is induced, you will receive what is called “suggestions”, suggestions will enable you  to make the positives changes you sought when you hired a hypnotist. Typically hypnosis is done in a clinical setting, like any other therapist office, but can also take place in many settings like a public park or community center.  Our sessions are not rushed, but typically last about an hour and include a brief interview.

Stress busting tips that work part 2

Hey campers! In our last article we gave you 5 simple ways you could combat stress. We talked about identifying our stressors, letting go of commitments that are holding you back, being more punctual and getting more organized.  We want to follow up with 5 more things you can do to reduce your stress level and keep on making positive changes.

Cut down on Multi-tasking

A common myth is that people are able to do multiple tasks at the same time. The truth is, the more tasks you are trying to do, the less effective you become.  As you become less effective and strain to disperse your attention evenly, your stress level rises with the tempo.  Focus on one thing at a time and you will be more effective and less stressed.

Don’t try to control everything

You can’t be master of the universe.  The sooner we accept the fact that we can’t control every variable in every situation, the more life will go our way. Keep a positive attitude and try to be accepting of the way other people process things.  “You can’t always get what you want, but if you try some times, you just might find, you get what you need.”

Eliminate things that drain your energy

If you went through the first step we suggested in the first part of this article, you already made a moral inventory and identified some of the things that were stressing you out most. (if you haven’t done this, please don’t forget to do so.) Think about the things you have identified, which of those things are things that drain you of energy? Identify things (or even people) who drain you of energy. Make a plan to avoid these things.

Identify and Avoid Stressful People

You know who they are. Make a list and think about how you can either avoid or better deal with these people.  Hopefully you already started dealing with the draining people more effectively, now it’s time to move on to dealing with people who cause stress in your life.  Dealing with stressful people on your terms is much easier than dealing with them on theirs or even not dealing with them at all.

Help other people

If this seems out of character for a stress busting tip, you should consider it strongly! Helping others helps you to reflect on an important part of your humanity.  When we serve others, we feel better about ourselves. Just as people and stressful situations can facilitate stress, being actively engaged in the cause of good will do nothing but elevate your happiness.
