The Problem With “Hypnosis Is Magic”

The good news is hypnosis is amazingly effective at helping people. The bad news is many people think hypnosis is magic.

Hypnosis isn’t magic. It’s a very specific process that anyone can experience if they have an attention span and can follow instructions.

Thanks to the media and other poor representations of hypnosis in pop culture there is a large number of misinformed people who think hypnosis is mystical, magical and even, God forbid, satanic.

For those people whose minds are already made up about this there’s nothing I can say. But for those willing to learn and put aside preconception they will find out that hypnosis is a natural process we all experience.

The problem of “Hypnosis is Magic” occurs when people come to me with some of the following requests:

Hypnosis as a cure for your relationship.

I once had a couple come to me requesting to hypnotize the wife to prove that she didn’t have an affair five years earlier while the husband was passed out drunk. Clearly, that was not a hypnosis problem, it was a relationship problem. I told them to see a counselor to help them with their trust issues.

Hypnosis for someone else’s problem

I still get asked “Can you make my kid/parent/spouse fill-in-the-blank?” Basically they are saying “I can’t control my this person the way I want. Can you help?”

The short answer to that is “Maybe I can, but only if they ask me.”

I know the strength of hypnosis and in some cases it’s possible to change people without them knowing but I won’t do that. It’s too much work and there are no guarantees.

Hypnosis to forget

This is usually requested because of pain or trauma that people want to get over. As powerful as hypnosis is total amnesia for events is hit-or-miss at best. Yes, it’s possible but it’s seldom efficient.

A better solution to painful memories and trauma is to strengthen character of the client so can remember events without associated pain. Former traumas become simply events of their life. They will agree they were painful but feeling stronger and those events no longer control them on a day-to-day basis.

Hypnosis for some new age psychic energy thing

Because hypnosis has such broad applications it’s been applied heavily in the new age arena of mystics, psychics and energy workers. While I wish them well in using it, for me hypnosis is a very powerful and precise tool for helping people. Things like ‘opening the third eye’ or ‘raising my own energy’ are just too nonspecific for me to measure. Hypnosis is best suited for changing unwanted behaviors and enhancing performance.

Yes, When I’m hypnotizing someone I go for the ‘Wow!’, that’s what they proclaim when the session is over. It’s a testament of the intensity of what they experienced and proof to them they were in hypnosis.

People will tell you the quality of change they feel from hypnosis is “magical” but that does NOT mean it is magic.

Why New Years Resolutions Don’t Matter

new-years-resolutionsMost of us consider the New Year as a time to re-evaluate … EVERYTHING … and vow to do better. That is the origin of the New Years Resolution.

This is the reason sales of gym memberships soar in January and why gym attendance plummets in February.

It’s hard to imagine what can happen in one year but each year we try again to do better.

Understand, I’m not telling anyone to stop making New Years resolutions. In fact, I’ think we would do better to make a resolution EVERYDAY for only that day.  That way it’s more likely over time that change will happen slowly over the year instead of all at once from January 1st onward.

Think of what you could do if you made 365 small day-long resolutions in a row. You would probably accomplish more with those 365 small resolutions than with a solitary yearly one.

What kind of daily resolution could you make?

  • To be kinder to those closest to you for this one day.
  • To repeat positive phrases quietly in your mind for this one day.
  • To show up on time for this one day.
  • To remove social media from your life for this one day.
  • To give the best service you can for this one day.
  • To read something positive for this one day.
  • To give an honest compliment to three or more people just for today.
  • Anonymously perform one act of kindness for today.

The list can go on and on.

Why wait for a year to roll around when you can resolve to do something good every time the day begins?

Perhaps the title of this article is wrong, New Years resolutions ARE important. Sometimes what is more important isn’t the big efforts we make to improve our lives, but the small ones.

The Simplest and Easiest Stop Smoking Method EVER – and it’s free!!!

smoking-nuns260x185Let me be clear, this is an experiment and if you’re a smoker who wants to quit smoking you’re invited to take part.

This idea came about by asking myself “What is the very smallest change someone could do that would lead to them quitting smoking?

It’s pretty simple actually, mindlessly simple! But there are some rules you have to follow. Simple rules … very simple rules.

Here they are:

1) Every day, at least once a day, say with meaning the words “I’m a non-smoker.” You don’t have to say it to anyone but yourself. In front of a mirror is good. Once a day is enough.

2) Say it as though you really mean it.

3) Vow to say those words with meaning at least once a day for the rest of your life.

4) You are FORBIDDEN to feel guilty about smoking. If you decide to smoke, then smoke. It’s your decision.

You are under NO obligation to stop smoking or to change your smoking habit in ANY way.  When you decide to smoke a cigarette smoke it.

….and everyday you are going to say “I’m a non-smoker” with meaning.

If  you decide to not have a cigarette, fine.

….and everyday you are going to say “I’m a non-smoker” with meaning.

If you decide to try something to quit smoking, like the gum, cold turkey or The Patch, GREAT give it your very best.

….and everyday you are going to say “I’m a non-smoker” with meaning.

If you decide to use hypnosis to stop smoking, GREAT! I’ll be happy to help you.

….and everyday you are going to say “I’m a non-smoker” with meaning.

And if at some point you decide to never pick up a cigarette again, Wonderful!

….and everyday you are going to say “I’m a non-smoker” with meaning.

The Theory

The reason this works is that you are subtly forcing yourself to see yourself as a non-smoker.

Of course it could take some time … that’s okay!  There is no pressure on you to stop smoking. You can smoke as little or as much as you want. By say “I’m a non-smoker” everyday with meaning you are nudging your subconscious mind to see yourself in a whole new way.

Because you know that everyday you’re going to say “I’m a non-smoker” that you may find you can delay or avoid a cigarette more easily. And when you want to smoke you still can. You are also creating an opportunity to think about HOW you might become that non-smoker.

There is no time limit for when you’ll quit. It might take a week or a month or 10 years. The time doesn’t matter. All that matters is that you KNOW you’re going to be saying those words everyday… no matter what.

Of course, I want to hear your results. The instructions are pretty simple but if you have any questions let me know.

Hypnosis for Memory Recall

How fast could you learn if you didn't have to think about learning?

How fast could you learn if you didn’t have to think about learning?

Understanding How memory works

In order to better understand how hypnosis works for memory improvement, it might be is interesting to understand how the mind works in the first place.  Our memories are part of a complicated system which is not fully understood. There are different kinds of memory, like short term “working” memory, like recalling an email address momentarily for immediate use. Then there is long-term memory, which refers to your semantic or autobiographical memory.

How hypnosis works for Memory Recall

Hypnosis can be used to enhance memory recall by dealing with the sub-conscious mind to improve the mechanisms in which we create and retrieve memories.  Have you ever hidden something important, only to forget where you hid it? You might not have considered it, but many people have used hypnosis to recover lost items.  Over the years I have been asked to help recover lost jewelry, keys, wedding rings, money and so on. This is a powerful demonstration of the usefulness of hypnosis in memory recall.

Our experiences with Hypnosis for Memory Recall

The maximum benefit of Hypnosis to improve memory recall has not yet been realized. We have developed a cutting edge technique utilizing hypnosis to increase persons recall ability. The result is we have created a subconscious mental process to store and retrieve memories more efficiently.  The typical mnemonic system requires a conscious intent to set something into memory.  Through hypnosis, we have been able to remove this barrier and make learning a methodical process. This hypnosis training is completed during series of 1 on 1 hypnosis sessions which last for 3 consecutive days. Students of this training have reported astounding results, such as learning a new language in 30 days, playing musical instruments in less than one month, higher mastery in their work-related skills and so on. We continue to work with people to improve memory recall through hypnosis, and push the boundaries of hypnosis for memory recall.

Stress busting tips that work part 2

Hey campers! In our last article we gave you 5 simple ways you could combat stress. We talked about identifying our stressors, letting go of commitments that are holding you back, being more punctual and getting more organized.  We want to follow up with 5 more things you can do to reduce your stress level and keep on making positive changes.

Cut down on Multi-tasking

A common myth is that people are able to do multiple tasks at the same time. The truth is, the more tasks you are trying to do, the less effective you become.  As you become less effective and strain to disperse your attention evenly, your stress level rises with the tempo.  Focus on one thing at a time and you will be more effective and less stressed.

Don’t try to control everything

You can’t be master of the universe.  The sooner we accept the fact that we can’t control every variable in every situation, the more life will go our way. Keep a positive attitude and try to be accepting of the way other people process things.  “You can’t always get what you want, but if you try some times, you just might find, you get what you need.”

Eliminate things that drain your energy

If you went through the first step we suggested in the first part of this article, you already made a moral inventory and identified some of the things that were stressing you out most. (if you haven’t done this, please don’t forget to do so.) Think about the things you have identified, which of those things are things that drain you of energy? Identify things (or even people) who drain you of energy. Make a plan to avoid these things.

Identify and Avoid Stressful People

You know who they are. Make a list and think about how you can either avoid or better deal with these people.  Hopefully you already started dealing with the draining people more effectively, now it’s time to move on to dealing with people who cause stress in your life.  Dealing with stressful people on your terms is much easier than dealing with them on theirs or even not dealing with them at all.

Help other people

If this seems out of character for a stress busting tip, you should consider it strongly! Helping others helps you to reflect on an important part of your humanity.  When we serve others, we feel better about ourselves. Just as people and stressful situations can facilitate stress, being actively engaged in the cause of good will do nothing but elevate your happiness.

How can Hypnosis help?

Along the way, this is the sort of practical advice people who have been clinical hypnosis patients can put directly into play.  Hypnosis will help you to have the fortitude to put these helpful suggestions in to play.  If you are struggling with stressful situations, we can help you to overcome them.

Stress Busting tips that work part 1

You’ve read articles about how to unwind from a stressful day, heck we’ve even written some of them. But we wonder, if maybe a more important article for you to read is about how to overcome stressful situations before they actually occur.

Let’s face it, a “stress free” life is impossible but, if we are honest with ourselves, we can discern which stress is unneeded. If you endeavor to carefully edit your life and remove some potentially harmful habits and behaviors, you can eliminate stress where possible in your life.  The thing you have to realize is, it’s not what situations you face in life that effect stress, it’s how you react to the situations you are faced with that will make all the difference in the world.

Imagine this fictional scenario.  Meet Jack, he’s just like you and I.  On Monday he slept through his alarm. He woke up in a disoriented panic 20 minutes after he was supposed to. He had to rush through his morning routine and as a result, he forgot to brush his teeth, he missed a spot while shaving and even mismatched his socks. As he heads out the door and to his car, he notices he forgot his wallet and had to rush back into the house. When he finally got to the car, he realized he left the keys in the house and had to double back yet again.  Now a full 30 minutes late for work, he gets in his car to brave rush-hour traffic on the thru-way.  As he exits his sub-division he gets cut off by a large truck, which is also raining debris all over the road.  In frustration he beeps his horn and gestures to the trucker.  Oh this is going to be a GREAT day! By the time he gets to work, he is in a less than chipper mood. He arrives to his desk to a pile of papers and a full e-mail box and looming deadlines.

Maybe this is a little extreme, but we can all relate to days that start out like this. How can we respond to these situations and rebound with grace and eliminate stress? Here are 5 tools you can keep in your toolbox for combating stress in your life.

Identify the things that trigger stress

This is a really essential step to eliminating stress. Sit down and take a fearless moral inventory of the things that set you off. Maybe you could start with a top 10 list and work from there. Think about the things you can avoid all together. Think about the things you can’t avoid and think about how you could respond differently to them.

Let go of commitments that are holding you back

Sometimes we obligate ourselves to things that seem practical at first but after time reveal themselves to be more trouble than they are worth. Getting rid of some of these commitments can give you the sanity you have been grasping for. Sometimes it’s easier to move on than to keep trying to “muster up” the will to keep at it. Be honest with yourself!

Don’t be a procrastinator

Maybe it’s impossible for you to avoid this behavior completely, but certainly you can work at discerning when this behavior is especially harmful.  Letting it all pile up will leave you feeling inadequate and overwhelmed.  A good start is to keep your email inbox clean and your desk clear.  You’ll feel better, trust us!

Get organized

We all have disorganization in our lives. Even when we create a system things get unhinged over time. Don’t let this frustrate you. Focus on getting rid of the visual clutter and keeping things neat. You’ll –feel- better about yourself if you do.

Don’t be Late

People lose trust in you when you are late. Being late also affects your confidence once you show up. Get in the habit of being early and this stress disappears. Now that you have some practical advice on how to overcome stress, go out there and put it into action.

We’ll post part 2 of this article soon with more stress busting tips next week!

Tips for a Healthy Lifestyle

So you’ve been to our office, you have had a pleasurable experience with Hypnotherapy and you are on your way to weight loss success! Here are some tips you can use to get you where you are going.

In order for us to get the maximum benefit out of life, it is important to have a balanced, healthy diet that provides the nutrients and energy needed to survive and live a healthy life.  When you combine a healthy diet with an active, healthy lifestyle you will have the assurance of a reduced risk for heart disease, cancer and obesity.

Change ahead isolated signWhat is a healthy diet?

There are many different recommendations by the US government that encourage the public to eat more fruit and vegetables.  Did you know the government encourages you to eat 4-5 servings of vegetables and fruit each day? (Excluding potatoes, which are considered a starch?) A “serving” is considered 80g and could be something like 1 banana or an apple or similar sized fruit.

Be aware of dietary myths

Foods that are very starchy, like rice, pasta and bread should be the cornerstone of any meal.  They are a good source of energy and will provide you a range of helpful nutrients that will keep you going throughout the day.  It’s actually a myth that starchy foods are fattening, in fact they contain less than half the calories of fat! (1g of fat is 9kcals, in comparison, 1g of carbohydrate has 4kcals.)

Keep it Balanced!

We’re not dieticians, but we believe in a balanced diet that doesn’t single out specific food groups as “good” and others as “bad”. Cutting out any food group completely can lead to more serious implications or a nutrient deficiency.

Fat in your diet

Excess fat can be troublesome and lead to weight gain and even cardiovascular problems.  It’s recommended that women not have any more than 70g of fat a day and Men not consume more than 95g of fat per day.   There are 3 types of fat: Saturated, Monounsaturated and Polyunsaturated. The one you have to worry about is “saturated”.  The least you need to know about fat in your diet is that low fat diets limit the intake of fatty acids and fat soluble vitamins.  You can’t cut it out completely, so just moderate your consumption.

Keep Hydrated!

Dehydration causes nausea, constipation and headaches, just to name a few. It is recommended that you drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. You should increase this if you live in a hot climate or are involved in an activity that causes you to perspire more.

Be easy with the salt

A diet high in salt will lead you down the road to high blood pressure and will no doubt increase your risk of having a stroke.  Although some salt comes from the salt we add to our food during cooking or at the table, something you might not be aware of is that 75% of the salt we consume has already been added to the food before we buy it! Look out for sodium levels in your food before you buy it.
